What Should You Know Before Installing OrkinTherm?
Before installing OrkinTherm, it’s important that you determine your current R-value. An R-value is a measurement that indicates insulation’s resistance to heat flow. The R-value depends on the type of insulation, its thickness and density, as well as where and how it is applied. Follow these steps to determine how many bags of OrkinTherm you’ll need for your attic:
Step 1: Find your current R-value. In your attic, measure the depth of existing insulation and also note the type of insulation you have. Once you have that measurement, call OrkinTherm customer service at 1-800-228-0024, or ask a retail sales associate to calculate your current R-value.
Step 2: Find your desired R-value. The U.S. Department of Energy has set recommended R-values for homeowners and professionals to follow when applying installation. Review the map and chart below to determine the recommended R-value for your home.
Step 3: Calculate additional R-value needed. Subtract your current R-value from the desired R-value. The resulting number is the additional R-value needed to reach the U.S. Department of Energy’s recommended level for your home.
Step 4: Determine the number of bags you need. Based on the R-value determined in Step 3, you can now estimate the number of bags you will need for your project. Review the chart below to determine the number of bags you should purchase.
